How to check Amazon price history and buy at the right price

Updated October 29, 2026

Is this Amazon price actually low? How to check a product's price history, set price drop alerts and know when to buy and when to wait.

Why price history matters

Amazon prices change constantly, sometimes several times a day. The crossed-out list price shows a reference price, not what the product sold for last month. Price history tells you if today's price is really low or just normal.

Three ways to see price history

Amazon's own labels: many listings show "Lowest price in 30 days" or a "Typical price" next to the deal. These are the quickest check and come straight from Amazon.

Price tracker websites and browser extensions: independent price trackers chart a product's Amazon price over months or years, so you can see its usual price, its all-time low and how often it goes on sale.

Your wish list or cart: add the product to a list and Amazon shows price changes there, which is a simple way to watch a few items before a big sale.

How to read a price chart

Look for the price the product sits at most of the time. That is its real everyday price. A deal is good when it is clearly below that line, not when it beats a list price nobody pays.

Check how often the price drops. If a product goes on sale every few weeks, there is no rush. If it only dips on Prime Day and Black Friday, a sale price at those times is worth taking.

Watch for price hikes right before a big sale. A product that jumped in price two weeks ago and then "drops" to its old price is not a real deal.

Set alerts and stop refreshing

Most price trackers let you set a target price and send an email or notification when Amazon reaches it. Set your target near the product's previous low and let the alert do the work.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon show price history?

Not as a full chart, but many listings show "Lowest price in 30 days" or a typical price. For a full history, use a price tracker website or browser extension.

Do Amazon prices go down after I buy?

They can. Amazon does not offer price adjustments on most items, but if the item is still in its return window you can return it and buy again at the lower price.

What is a good discount on Amazon?

It depends on the product. A price clearly below its usual selling price is good; matching its all-time low is great. A big percentage off an inflated list price is not.
